As your empire grows, the words you say and the behavior you model begin to have a strange power that they didn’t have before. Famous people find that when they observe and talk publicly about current events, people, business trends, and so on, they can often become part of the story. If I tweet, “This burger from McBurgerHut tastes great,” nobody will care. If the CEO of Burger Castle tweets the same thing, sales go up for a day and maybe a meme spreads around the internet for a week. If the President of the US tweets the same thing, sales shoot up 10%, stocks go up 5%, the tweet is on the front-page news for a day, and then McBurgerHut becomes the meeting place for the common man to show support for the President.

While my words echo across the internet like the waves of a small paddle boat on the sea, the CEO’s words echo like a freight ship, and the President’s words are like an earthquake.

Intuitively, we understand that the President’s words are more important because of the power they have to shape reality. That’s a strange thing when you think about it. Abstract thoughts can change physical reality. It’s even stranger when your words begin to echo louder than you remember them, without you knowing or trying to make that happen. That’s what happens when some famous people talk about things in public.

That’s what happens when you enter the arena of human events.

We all have power at some level. Our words can ripple through space and time through our children. One day you’re telling your son “good job” for remembering how to say 「クジラ」 in English, the next day he’s moving to America to work for Toyota’s US branch. Or, one day you ignore his English grades and focus on that funny variety TV show with all the celebrities on it, the next day he’s hungover at his job working at the factory after puking on a cute girl at the nomikai the previous night.

The wise man will recognize early in life that his actions and words have power, no matter how mysterious and unknowable. For people that want to do good for others, that’s why it’s important to live life the way you believe is good for other people to live.

Remember: Your words and actions have power. In Japan, Japanese words have more power than English, but around the world, English has more power. If you want your words to ripple across the world, they’ll need to be in English.

You will naturally need to take the lead on all kinds of mundane matters. At your weekend English class, you will naturally need to actively ask questions about grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation. Many people at your class are passive, waiting for the teacher to do some magic and put English abilities inside their head. Not you. You know that the only person that can achieve your ambitions is you. Your future is in your hands. You take the lead on your English education because you know that nobody else can or will.

You also know that you’re not going to find a nice boyfriend or girlfriend waiting around inside your house. Getting a date isn’t like fishing; it’s like hunting. Vetting the king or queen of your future empire is on you.

The normal course of your career will force leadership opportunities on you. Your boss will ask for someone to translate a document into English, and you’ll do it. Someone will ask you your English studying advice. Your new king or queen will ask you what you want for dinner.

Over time, the weight of the responsibility you take will increase. With each new decision, the stakes will be raised. Friends will ask you for life advice. You’ll start leading bigger and bigger projects at work. You’ll have more kids and a bigger house to manage. Your network of business friends will ask you to collaborate on projects.

Leadership will be thrust upon you, whether you want it or not. When leadership opportunities arise

You’ve been practicing for this moment.

When you see a problem, you fix it.
When a member of your network has a question, you find the answer.
When a member of your network needs some help, you help or get help.
When you see an opportunity to build your network up, you build.

You’ve been practicing leadership from the beginning. That’s why more and more people looked to you for leadership as you’ve grown.

But as a leader, you know you can’t do everything yourself. You need to help others in your network develop their leadership skills. An emperor needs his generals. You continue to role model for them the best example that you can imagine. When the time is right and an opportunity presents itself, you delegate a leadership opportunity to one of your generals. You give your people a chance to shine.

The essence of leadership is to give energy to people and principles you believe in. You will develop your own leadership style, but successful leaders need to follow certain guidelines.

For example, if you want to get the most out of the people you lead, you should avoid criticizing. Instead, find the things that they are doing right and bring attention to them. Oversize your attention to the parts of them you like and totally ignore the bad. Remember: People want to feel important. If they do something that you like, tell them! Make them feel important! Bring attention to the great thing they did and tell them to keep up the good work!

As much as possible, ignore their weaknesses. Bring attention to when they appear to fix their weaknesses. Attention gives people, as well as their words and actions, energy and importance. In fact, nothing will feel as important as when you give attention to it.

That’s a warning: Be careful what you give attention to as a leader! A leader’s attention has power. Use your power wisely.

At some level, you want to influence people. At a micro level, you might want to influence your wife to reduce her sugar intake. You might want to influence your son to go outside more. Or maybe you want to influence your friend to work on a project with you. That’s the micro level—influence of individuals.

Most people, most of the time, work at that level. The majority of our communications are one-on-one.

Some people make lots of money at the micro level of influence. Parents talking to their children work at that level. Car salesmen work at that level. Customer service at the camera store works at that level. Any time someone is looking you in the eyes, they are trying to influence you at the micro level.

Once you’re good at micro level influence, you usually level up to the macro level. Leading business meetings and having parties at your house are a step up from the micro level. Marketing, Ted talks, sports commentating, podcasting, etc. are at the highest levels of influence. At that level, you are influencing large groups of people you have never and likely will never meet.

But the question is: How do you influence? How do you change minds? How do you get people to do what you want?

Well, scientists say that there are six general influence strategies. They are:

  1. Reciprocity
  2. Consistency
  3. Consensus
  4. Liking
  5. Authority
  6. Scarcity

If you can skillfully use those general influence strategies, you will have a much greater chance of getting what you want.

When you get a job in America, you will need to speak English. If you can pronounce English at a near native level, your authority will increase. You will gain the respect of native English speakers and make it easier for them to understand and like you. Why? Because people like you are quite scarce. Near-native English pronunciation communicates a lot about you. As a result, you will be able to influence people more easily than if you spoke broken English. Getting a promotion, making a deal, or getting a date will come more easily.

If you are getting attention and successfully influencing people, you are already operating at a level higher than the average person. The world is yours for the taking. The question is: what do you do with your high profile and persuasion skills?

One of the ways we know that we’re doing something important is when other people notice. Strangely, we find it difficult to believe the people in our inner circle. Instinctively, we know they have lots of good reasons to lie to us, even when they know we want the truth. Attention from a wider audience of people beyond our inner circle—from people who have no reason to lie to us—feels more honest and significant. It tells us we’re really doing something right.

And that attention can lead to greater things. At some point, if we want freedom, we need attention, too. If we want that big promotion and transfer to the US, we need to get the big boss’s attention. Small business owners need all the attention they can get (we call it marketing). People working in entertainment need an audience. Educators need students to pay attention.

The best way to get attention? Give attention. Remember, everybody wants to feel important. People are starved for attention and a feeling of importance. That’s ten times as true for adults. If you can make someone feel important, you will have their attention. Practice making people feel important.

If you’re learning English, find Japanese learners. Help them learn Japanese.
If you want to get that big promotion, help other people get their big promotion.
If your small business needs some customers, go find ways to help other small businesses get customers.

Having trouble getting attention? Ask yourself: Why should anybody pay attention to you? Are you really as capable as you believe? Are you really as intelligent or beautiful as you think? Be honest with yourself. If you aren’t worthy of attention, become worthy.

People that are masters of getting attention from large groups of people have a frightening, even dangerous, power. Once you have someone’s attention, you are plugged into their thoughts. You have the potential to change their thoughts, and thus their actions. When you have the attention of many people, you have the opportunity to influence them.

Let me ask you a question: Is freedom important to you? If so, do you know exactly what “freedom” means? It’s a bit harder to define than you might think. Is freedom the ability to do anything you want? Is it the ability to go anywhere you want? Is it that feeling you have while you relax on the beach?

If you want to study English at the donut shop, but your wife wants to watch a movie at home with you, how do you feel?

If you want to go to an English club, but your Japanese friends want to go out to an izakaya, how do you feel?

If you want your company to transfer you to their American branch, but they decide to keep you in Japan and give you a promotion, how do you feel?

Freedom is the feeling you have when you spend your time doing what you want.

Freedom is not an external thing that people give to you. It’s also not a “goal” or endpoint. It’s a result of your mindset and systems-thinking. You take or create freedom through your thoughts and the systems you design.

Your wife wants to watch movies with you because of your mindset and systems. You married someone that doesn’t want to support your ambitions because you didn’t know what you wanted, and because you didn’t have a system to get what you wanted.

Your friends want to go out drinking because you didn’t find English speaking friends. Neither did you distance yourself from friends that would undermine your ambitions.

Why didn’t your company transfer you to America? Because you got a job at a company that wouldn’t support your ambitions and you didn’t negotiate strongly enough for the American position.

In short, the cage you are locked in is the one you are creating everyday.

It will take a long time to free yourself from your mental prison. If you have supporters, cherish them. You may feel invisible and unimportant to all but those few beautiful people. But, you have those people. Their love and companionship is enough—more than enough. They sustain and energize you.

This is the beginning of your future empire. It’s a period of good times sprinkled here and there with bad, if you’re doing things right. Sure, there are fears and doubts about the future. After all, the world is a scary place. Your fear reminds you that you have something that’s worth loving and protecting. It’s a signal to keep you focused. No time for lallygagging; this empire isn’t gonna build itself.

But, empires are not built by lone wolves. At some point, you really do want to reach a wider audience. When you go to work and nobody really notices or cares, it’s deflating. If you release a new product and nobody buys, your financial future is in jeopardy. Getting attention will be a critical part of your journey to freedom.

So you’ve read a bit about mindset. You realize now that you have changes to make to your mindset. How do you make those changes? You probably are thinking, “I should make a goal!”

“My goal is to become 100% fluent in English!”

Stop. You’re on the wrong path. Making a goal is a mistake. Losers make goals. Don’t be a loser.

You’ve probably never heard something like that. School teachers tell us to make goals. Our parents tell us to make goals. The TV and Youtube people we like tell us to make goals. It almost like the whole world screams, “Make goals!”

Forget that. Winners don’t make goals.

Want to be effective? Make a system. Want to be dangerous? Make a system. Want to be powerful? Make a system. Men and women that are deadly productive make systems. Aspiring mothers of large families make systems. Aspiring business magnates make systems.

So what is a system and what is the different between a system and a goal?

Goals are endpoints.Systems are something you do regularly. Goals are reached. Systems are maintained.

Here are some common goals you may have heard or made before:

I’m going to get a high score on the TOEIC.
I’m going to get into a great school.
I’m going to become fluent in English.
I’m going to read an English novel.
I’m going to learn English so I can get a better job.

Any of these sound familiar?

Goal-making is loser-think. The reason is that people who make goals are stuck in a state of failure most of the time. Am I a fluent English speaker? No. Have I reached my goal yet? No. Another day, another failure.

If they reach their goal, they achieve “success”. They feel happy for a short time and then are left feeling empty. Why? They lost their purpose. They had something to work toward, then when they got it, they realized that they’re done and have nothing to do.

That is the best case scenario for goal-makers. Most days, a failure. For a short time, successful and happy. Then, lost and aimless.

Choose systems-thinking. Get rid of feelings of failure and aimlessness. Embrace systems and your systems will set you free.
